Quilts have been a part of civilization for centuries, dating back to ancient communities across Europe, Asia, and North America. Not only do they provide added warmth and comfort during the colder months, but many are “patched” together as family heirlooms, gaining squares with each generation.
If you’re hoping to start your own family quilt or want to simply add an extra layer to your bed, consider these handcrafted quilts below. (And for some added history, nearly all of them are traditionally made in South Asia by women artisans, leveraging skills passed down from generation to generation.) Whichever you choose is a one-of-a-kind to snuggle up in and enjoy for years to come.
Looking for comforters instead? Here are our favorite sustainable comforters and duvets for a cozy bed.
1. The Little Market
Sustainable Materials | Upcycled cotton saris
Sizes Available | Little (40” x 40”), Throw (80” x 40”), Small (80” x 70”), Medium (94” x 94”), Large (100” x 94”)
Prices Starting At | $98
The Little Market works with refugees and survivors from all around the globe to provide dignified work and wages; its entire line of Kantha Quilts (Kantha means “patched cloth”) is hand-stitched by Bangladeshi survivors of sex trafficking. There are five sizes available from Little to Large and each one denotes how long it took to sew together from 11+ to 30+ hours. They’re all one-of-a-kind, too, since they’re woven from upcycled saris and embroidered by the woman who made them. We love the traditional South Asian patterns and colors, The Little Market’s focus on these historically marginalized communities, and the low-waste double-sided production that goes into these accessible and artisanal quilts.
