CBD is one of those buzzy wellness topics that’s received a lot of hype over the past few years, but as with most trendy things, I was simultaneously eager to try it and a little skeptical of its efficacy. I’ve tried the occasional gummy and bath bomb, but I hadn’t tried any form of CBD routinely enough to really notice its effects.
Then, Evn CBD was sent my way. The brand’s line of CBD-infused products include gummies, tinctures, capsules, salves, a sleep powder, and even a few items for pets. Formulated with organically sourced, non-GMO hemp grown on family-owned farms in Wisconsin, Evn’s products range from 200 milligrams of broad-spectrum CBD in gummy form to more concentrated 500-milligram tinctures.
I spent about a week trying Evn’s various products to see what my experience was using CBD on a daily basis. Considering I started using it during a week where I was both PMSing and apartment hunting in New York City, I was truly putting these products and their anti-stress properties to the test.
What Effects Can CBD Have?
If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard a lot about CBD but still may not be sure exactly what it does. Starting with the simple definition, CBD is an active ingredient in cannabis derived from the hemp plant. Research conducted on CBD has found that it potentially eases symptoms of anxiety, menopause, pain, and depression.
Still, you should talk to your doctor before trying CBD — especially if you take any medications, as it could cause an interaction. While many people take CBD without any issues, some do experience side effects like fatigue, nausea, and irritability. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns not to use CBD in any form if you’re pregnant or nursing, and it’s also not recommended for children.
CBD doesn’t produce the psychoactive sensation of THC — or tetrahydrocannabinol, another compound of cannabis — which makes it a good alternative for someone who wants the soothing, pain-relieving qualities of weed without the feeling-high effect.
My Experience Using Evn’s CBD Products
As I mentioned earlier, I started my week-long trial of Evn during a time when stress relief was much needed. The first day, I tried one dropper of the oil (containing 16.6 milligrams of CBD) and asked my partner — for scientific purposes, of course — to rub my back with the CBD salve. The effects were subtle but palpable. I felt immediately relaxed, though using two products at once might have been a little much for me considering I took a long nap immediately after work.
The next day, I stuck to just one dropper of the CBD oil with my morning cup of coffee. I found that I love the taste of this particular tincture — it has a light coconut flavor due to the MCT oil that accompanies the CBD. Generally speaking, I struggle with what I would call ambient anxiety. Throughout the day, I find myself frequently getting that pit-in-the-stomach feeling. Within the first two days of trying Evn, I could feel myself balancing out a little. I felt a bit more calm during situations that would normally overwhelm me, like meeting a lot of new people at a writer’s networking event.
For the week that I tried Evn, I alternated between using the tincture and taking two or three gummies around mid-afternoon/evening. While a lot of CBD gummies have that weed-y, somewhat bitter aftertaste, Evn’s gummy bears are the closest I’ve tried to regular gummy bears.
Lastly, I tried their cacao-flavored sleep powder, which tastes almost exactly like hot chocolate. I don’t generally have a difficult time falling asleep, so while this sleep powder didn’t feel necessary for me, it did feel like a nice wind-down. I could envision using it as part of a mellow nighttime routine, particularly with its added supplements like melatonin, which helps with insomnia, and L-theanine, which can help improve sleep quality.
What I found using Evn’s family of products was that while they didn’t magically rid me of worrying (of course), CBD did seem to fine-tune my stress-fighting abilities. Throughout the week I felt like I was able to face situations that would normally shut me down a little with a more balanced, less fearful mentality. I noticed a subtle shift and balancing of my mood and focus, like I was able to calm down and think a little more clearly.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Here’s a glimpse at what some reviewers had to say about Evn’s CBD offerings:
“Evn natural oil really does help calm my nerves. It doesn’t make me drowsy but more relaxed. I notice that I sleep better too!” — Cindy
